If you’re looking for US Postal Service jobs then the first question that’s probably on your mind is: Will I qualify for a US Postal Service career? It’s a legitimate question. After all, you want to be certain that your application will stand a chance of being considered. So what are the qualifications for those who want to apply for the USPS?
The USPS gives a general list of employment requirements for those who want to pursue a career in postal service. First of all, you must be 18 years old at the time of appointment. If you are only 16 years old but have a high school diploma, you may qualify as well.
The citizenship requirement must be met. Only United States citizens, “green card” holders or those who are considered as lawful permanent resident aliens, or citizens of American Samoa or other territories that owe allegiance to Uncle Sam can be a Postal Service employee. You cannot work for the USPS if you are solely granted asylum status, refugee status or conditional permanent residence status. You should also have basic competency in the English language.
As part of the stringent requirements to be a postal worker, you should be able to provide the names of your current employer and all previous employers for the past ten years immediately preceding your application. This includes military service so if you are a veteran, make sure that this is indicated in your application and that you should a copy of your Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. By the way, if you are a male born after December 31, 1959, you should be registered with the Selective Service System.
In addition, you will be required to undergo a drug screen as being drug-free is a prerequisite to postal employment. Your criminal record will also be checked before you are given an employment offer. When you’re employed, the USPS will also conduct more extensive criminal record checks. It’s best to be honest and upfront if you have prior misdemeanors or other less than worthy conduct.
For certain positions, you will be required to undergo a medical assessment to determine if you are medically suited for it. If you applied for a post which requires you to drive on the job, having a safe driving record is mandatory.
These are the basic eligibility requirements for being a postal service worker. Of course, you will have to show the hiring managers why you’re a cut above the rest during the application process but if you meet all these basic requirements now then you can concentrate on impressing them with your postal exam test results and answers to the interview.
