How do you begin a successful job search? In today’s job market where the competition for jobs is intense, applying properly can mean the difference between getting called for an interview or getting your application trashed. Indeed, whether you’re rooting for jobs in the private or public sector, first impressions matter because they last.

If you want the hiring manager to give your resume more than a cursory glance then you should take the time in preparing it. Make sure that you have all your credentials, transcripts, and certificates ready for quick and easy reference. While you may need to tailor your application when applying for certain companies, crafting a general resume makes tailor-fitting it easier because you already have all the data you need.

Be especially careful with making government jobs applications. A Federal resume is different from the resume you make for private companies. It’s usually more detailed and requires you to fill in such information as the announcement or vacancy number and other details posted on the job announcement. Be sure you’re qualified for the Federal jobs you are applying for before lodging your application. You will be wasting your time and energy if you insist on sending an application that lists a postgraduate degree as a minimum requirement and you’re only a fresh bachelor’s degree holder. Although there are some vacancies that do accept solid work experience in lieu of education, the firms that do so will usually indicate this in the job announcement. Otherwise, not targeting your application to the jobs that you are qualified for will only mean more rejection letters that can potentially shatter your self-confidence.

Follow up. Hiring managers for companies do expect calls from applicants-and if you feel that you’re really qualified for the job then giving them that follow up call is warranted. Of course, there is no guarantee that you’ll get hired because you inquired how your application is coming along. But in case it got misplaced or misfiled then it can be found and directed to the hiring manager who will be able toaccord it the proper review.

When you do get called for a job interview then make sure that you dress appropriately and arrive at the interview at least thirty minutes before your schedule. This way, you will be able to compose yourself before facing your interviewers and will be able to answer their questions well.

It’s true that the U.S. job market is much more difficult to hack these days. But with patience, planning, and due diligence, you should be able to land in your dream job.
