If you have experience driving a tractor trailer and are looking for an employment opportunity with the United States Postal Service then you can be one of their PSE Tractor Trailer Operators. For this position, the pay is around $18 per hour with opportunities for raises, paid vacation days, and access to health insurance after the first 360-day term.

As a PSE Tractor Trailer Operator, your task is to assist and operate a heavy-duty tractor-trailer in various operations to pick up and transport mail in bulk. These include over-the-road service, city shuttle service, or trailer spotting operations on pre-established routes. You may also be required to operate the vehicle in unscheduled service directed move by telephone or two-way radio or through designated supervisors.

Aside from picking up and delivering bulk mail at postal installations, mailing concerns, railroad mail facilities and airports, you will also be asked to see to that that the tractor-trailer is in good condition before and after returning it to the garage. You are also required to report all accidents, mechanical defects and failures, if there are any, during the course of your trip. In cases of emergency, you are tasked with making decisions as to whether changes in route and/or loading or leaving mail for a later trip are necessary. You should follow safe work methods and other precautions in the performance of your duties. You may also be required to perform other duties in addition to your regular responsibilities. These additional tasks can be in mail processing; retail/customer services; and maintenance of motor vehicles.

To be eligible for a tractor-trailer operator position with the USPS, you need to pass a web and IVR assessment when you apply for the vacancy in the USPS website ( You should also have been driving for two years, with at least one-year full time, 7-ton trucks or buses that carry 16 passengers or more. Of the required total driving experience, you should have spent 6 months operating a tractor-trailer.

Take note that the time requirement of driving experience does not immediately make you eligible for the position. Your record of experience and training must prove that you are able to perform the duties of this postal position. Furthermore, you should possess a valid commercial drive’s license from your state and have an air brake certification for the types of vehicles used on the job. Needless to say, you should also have demonstrated and maintained a safe driving record.
