The United States Postal Service has an opening for tractor trailer operators in its district offices in Long Island. Operators are specifically needed in Melville and Garden City. Successful applicants receive an hourly wage of $21 and are entitled to limited benefits. These include opportunities for raises, paid vacation day, and access to health insurance after the first 360-day term.
Tractor trailer operators are responsible for assisting with and operating a heavy-duty tractor trailer in over-the-road service, city shuttle service, or trailer spotting operations on a pre-established route to pick up and transport mail in bulk. Duties include picking up and delivering bulk quantities of mail at postal installations, mailing concerns, railroad mail facilities and airports. Operators are also responsible for ascertaining the condition of the tractor trailer before leaving and after returning it to the garage. If he notices mechanical defects or failures on his journey, it is his responsibility to report such to his supervisor. He is also responsible for making decisions in the event of emergencies encountered on the road. For instance, he can decide whether to load mail or leave it for a later trip. It is expected that a trailer tractor operator follows established safe work methods, procedures and safety precautions while on the job.
Since driving is required for this postal employment opportunity, applicants must possess a valid commercial driver’s license and meet the driving standards set forth by the USPS. This includes having two years of general driving experience with at least one-year full time, or equivalent, of driving 7-ton trucks or buses of at least 16 passengers. Of the required total driving experience, a minimum of six months must be in a tractor trailer. Take note, however, that meeting the experience is not enough. Applicants must show the ability to perform the duties required. Their CDL must also be valid from the state where they live. They should also have air brakes certification for the types of vehicles used on the job.
For the Long Island offices of the Postal Service, deadline for the hiring of tractor trailer operators will be on February 1, 2013. Since paper applications will no longer be accepted, all interested applicants are encouraged to apply online through the USPS website (www.usps.com/employment).
Applicants for tractor trailer operators have to take postal exam 240. Similar to the exam that motor vehicle operator applicants take, postal test 240 is unique because it is not like a traditional test. Rather, this exam is a questionnaire which asks you about your driving record and experience. It is still a test because the Postal Service converts your answers to a numerical score. (Of course, they won’t say how they do it.) With this knowledge, honesty is a crucial element in passing this test.
