In the more than 200 years since the US Postal Service has been in business, dedicated postal workers have faithfully delivered letters and parcels to their intended recipients. Unless it is really physically impossible for a postman to deliver mail “such as when a mound of snow literally blocks the road” no storm, typhoon, or even terrorist attack can stop postal letter carriers from doing their jobs. In fact, post offices in New York City resumed operations 24 hours after the 9/11 attacks and continued to deliver mail even during Hurricane Sandy.

But there are times when the post office is closed. Aside from Sundays when all postal employees have to take a day off, there are no regular mail delivery/pickup or retail services during Postal holidays. It is not also possible for postal clients to Hold Mail or Redelivery to begin or end during these holidays.

Here are the scheduled Postal holidays for 2013:

  • January 1 – New Year’s Day
  • January 21 – Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday
  • February 18 – Washington’s Birthday (President’s Day)
  • May 27 – Memorial Day
  • July 4 – Independence Day
  • September 2 – Labor Day
  • October 14 – Columbus Day
  • November 11 – Veteran’s Day
  • November 28 – Thanksgiving Day
  • December 25 – Christmas Day

While these are the Postal holidays where USPS employees will not be able to do any physical deliveries, there is one post office that is always open: The USPS website ( It allows postal customers to arrange for certain services even when the rest of the postal workers are on a break during specified holidays.

At the Postal Store, the official online Post Office, customers can purchase stamps and other postal items. Sales have already totaled more than $236 million in 2011. Customers can also create and send customized mailings from their computers using the online store’s CardStore, Premium Postcards, and Click2Mail. Those who need to change their address can also do so through the Internet Change-of-Address feature in the website. They can even order moving supplies and sign up for other services here as well. If you need to reserve or renew a Post Office Box, it is also possible to do so online. More than 10 million Postal Service clients have scheduled for the USPS to hold their mail during the times when they were away from home through the online Hold Mail Service feature.

Other things that can be done in this virtual post office that’s open 24 hours a day 7 days a week include tracking and confirming mails; ZIP Code lookup; calculating postage; Click-N-Ship; and locating a Post Office.
