If you know trucks and vehicles like the palm of your hand and find maintaining them quite a breeze then you can work as a PSE Garageman with the United States Postal Service. The USPS has one of the largest civilian fleets in the world, using more than 200,000 vehicles to deliver mail and parcels. PSE Garagemen keep these in good condition.

PSE Garagemen are tasked with the performance of routine, preventive, and corrective services of all USPS motor vehicles. Duties include lubricating trucks and changing crankcase oil and filter cleaners and cleaning cases to conform to the type of vehicle and its mileage. It is their job to change tires; make repairs; wash and steam-clean trucks; fuel and oil trucks; and assist in automotive mechanics.

In addition to the vehicles, Garagemen also see to it that the garage, office, swing room, and washroom, are cleaned. They also see to it that established safe work methods, procedures and safety precautions are followed while performing their duties. Since this position also requires the employee to drive, applicants must have a minimum of two years documented driving experience in the United States.

To qualify to become a PSE Garagemen, you must not have done any violations in the past that would disqualify you from the position. These include reckless driving or similar offenses (1 or more in the past 3 years and 2 or more in the past 5 years); driving offense that involves the use of drugs, alcohol, or controlled substances (any conviction in the past 5 years); and all other traffic offenses that are not parking violations (1 or more in the past 12 months, 3 or more in the past 3 years, 5 or more in the past 5 years).

You are also disqualified if you’ve been involved in any accident involving a fatality which was judged to be your fault. Any conviction of a hit-and-run offense in the past 5 years; suspension of your driving permit (1 or more in the past 3 years, 2 or more in the past 5 years); and revocation of your driving permit (1 or more in the past 5 years) are also causes for disqualification.

PSE Garagemen earn around $14 per hour. There is a written exam requirement for this position.
