Living in New York and looking an opportunity to work for the United States Postal Service? You’re in luck because the USPS currently has postal jobs in New York for those who would like to become city carrier assistants (CCA). Granted, CCAs are classified as non-career employees who receive only $15 per hour and limited benefits. But they also have a possible path for working long-term for the Postal Service as career employees.

A Postal Service spokeswoman said that there are currently 300 positions open in Western New York. But as far as city carrier assistant opportunities are concerned, facilities in Oneida, Malone, Latham, Greenwich, Port Jervis, Plattsburgh, Clinton, Seneca Falls, Endicott, East Syracuse, Delmar, Cortland, Clayton, Canton, Canastota, and others, are currently seeking applicants. You need to live within 50 miles of the postal facility to be eligible for these openings since work is going to be done there.

Applications for these postal jobs in New York are only accepted via the online employment system in the USPS website ( If you are new to this system, you first need to create an eCareer Profile to be able to apply for any USPS employment opportunity. They are no longer processing paper applications.

After you have built your profile and applied for this position (where you will need to complete a more detailed application form), the USPS hiring authorities will evaluate it and if you qualify, they will send you instructions regarding the Postal Service Test 473, a mandatory requirement for this job. It’s a test which measures your knowledge of job-related skills, knowledge, and abilities, specifically on checking addresses, completing forms, and coding and memory. You need to obtain a passing score if you want to be included in the register of candidates who will be eligible to proceed to the next step of the hiring process.

The work hours of a CCA start at 6 in the morning and end at 2:30 in the afternoon. You will be expected work on Saturdays and weekdays. If necessary, you will also be asked to work on Sundays and holidays. A valid state driver’s license, safe driving record, and at least 2 years of documented driving experience are also requisites.

The job of a CCA also requires physical effort so you need to be fit and healthy if you want to perform the duties of this position successfully. You will be standing, walking, and bending for long hours at a time. You will also be asked to handle heavy containers of mail up to the maximum allowed mailing weight. Since CCAs interact with postal customers, they are also required to exhibit people skills and be professional in their interactions with the public.
