The United States Postal Service Office of the Inspector General (USPS OIG) is the agency tasked with maintaining the integrity and accountability of America’s Postal Service. And it’s not an easy task. The USPS rakes in $70 billion in revenue and has half a billion career employees working to keep mail moving. The USPS OIG sees to it that the postal clients will continue to maintain their confidence in this organization and its postal workers by conducting independent audits and investigations. Through their programs and operations, they help prevent and detect fraud, waste, and misconduct. Their actions also deter Postal Service employees from committing postal crimes.

An auditor/audit evaluator specialist is one of the key employees of the Office of the Inspector General of the USPS. This position typically pays anywhere from $101,035.00 to $137,740.00 per year, depending on the location. As an auditor/audit evaluator specialist, you are the auditor-in-charge, project leader, or technical expert about matters that are assigned to you. You will be asked to perform research and execute the audit program and provide contracting expertise to the activities that teams do on a daily basis so that the audit and/or project may be completed.

Other duties include conducting performance, contract, and financial audits that have to do with Postal Service Supply Management and Facilities activities. Part of your job is to study and integrate a number of contracting processes to define audit targets or develop audit criteria or new approaches which other auditors can use. You can also be expected to provide expert advice to auditors to interpret contracting regulations or guidelines and how they apply to controversial problems.

In the performance of your task, you must be aware of your time schedule and should be able to complete a thorough data analyses on the set schedule. Reports you submit to your supervisor should require minimum, if any, changes. In these reports, you are expected to present multiple issues in a clear and concise manner. Your readers should be able understand your findings, conclusions and recommendations. You should have sufficient knowledge and experience in auditing or managing contracts, major acquisitions, or supply change management programs. You may be required to travel 50 percent of the time.

To be qualified for this position, you should have a Bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of specialized audit experience. You will have an edge, though, if your Bachelor’s degree is in Accounting and you have advanced educational qualifications like Masters or higher. Having professional certifications like CPA, CIA, SixSigma, and the like, will also be an advantage.
