Postal Exam 473-E Part B (Forms Completion): Tips for Success

Part B of the postal test 473-e is called Forms Completion. This portion of the 473 seeks to test your ability to identify the information needed to complete forms which you will regularly encounter in your job as a postal worker. In this test, you will be presented with forms that are actually used by the United States Postal Service. Certain boxes or blanks within a form is labeled with a number or a number and letter combination (e.g. 5, 5b) and you will be asked to answer multiple-choice type questions about the form given and how it should be completed.

The good thing about Part B is that it is not a right minus wrong test. That means that there is no penalty for guessing, unlike Parts A and C of the 473-e. Thus, you will be better off if you answer all the items even if you have to guess them. Since there are four choices, you have a 25 percent chance of getting a right answer. You can increase your odds to 50 percent by eliminating obviously wrong answers and making what is known as an “educated guess.”

To help you succeed in Part B, here are some more guidelines to follow:

  • Get to know the test directions. In Part B, just like in any other portion of the test, understanding the directions is important. It will increase your speed and the number of correct answers you will give as well. A common instruction in this test will sound something like this: Part B tests your ability to identify the information needed to complete U.S. Postal Service forms. It consists of 30 questions which you must answer in 15 minutes. You will be shown 5 different forms with 6 questions after each form.
  • Study the forms before answering them. Even if you are under immense time pressure, you should still take a bit of time to study the forms closely before answering the questions that follow. By familiarizing yourself with the form, you will be in a better position to locate the information asked for in the question.
  • Don’t be confused with all the letters and numbers. There will be many figures in this part of the exam. Aside from the answer choices (A, B, C, D), you will also see boxes and lines with numbers (3, 5, etc.) and number and letter combinations (5a, 10b). Add these to the numbering of each item (1-30). If you are not careful, you could mix them all up and arrive at the wrong answer.
  • You might also increase your chances of getting a high score in this test if you take the time to go to your local post office and get a copy of postal forms. Be sure to ask the Postmaster or any postal worker kindly. Study them so you will increase your confidence level and get a high score in this part of the postal exam 473-e.
