How to Pace Yourself when Taking Postal Exam 473-E

Postal exam 473-e is a time-pressured test that all applicants to U.S. Postal Service employment opportunities must take before they can be hired. It is an aptitude that seeks to determine if you have the skills that will make you perform the job of a postal worker successfully.

Anyone who has already taken postal test 473-e will tell you that the items are easy. In fact, they don’t even have to be reviewed. However, many applicants also get a low score because of one reason: The time pressure is intense. Each of the three parts of the test on Address Checking, Forms Completion, and Coding Memory must be finished within the specified time periods or you risk getting an ineligible score.

Beating the time limitation is a key factor in passing this postal battery test. To do this, you must learn how to pace yourself. When you know the art of pacing, you have a much better chance of answering all the test questions correctly. So how do you pace for postal test 473-e? Here are some steps:

  • Always be conscious of the time requirements for each part. Part A on Address Checking has 60 questions which you must answer in 11 minutes; Part B on Forms Completion has 30 questions which must be answered in 15 minutes; while Part C on Coding has 36 questions to be completed in 6 minutes and Memory also has another 36 questions to be answered in 7 minutes.
  • To pace yourself in Part A, try to answer the first 30 questions in only 4 minutes. Check the clock after the first 30 questions to see if you are still on track. Then continue answering the last 30 minutes in another 4 minutes. Use the final 3 minutes to go back to questions that you haven’t answered.
  • For Part B, try to answer around 15 questions in 6 minutes then check the clock to see if you’re apace. Then complete the rest of the 15 other questions in 6 minutes. Use the remaining 3 minutes to go to back to unanswered questions and review your work.
  • For the Coding and Memory sections, you need to be quick. Take up only 2 minutes to answer the first 18 questions before checking the clock to see if you’re on time. Then finish the rest of the items in another 2 minutes. Use the remaining 2 minutes (for Coding) and 3 minutes (for Memory) to review your answers.
  • Don’t spend too long on one question. If it is difficult or confusing, move on. If you are using your time wisely, you have a few minutes to go back to the items that you have missed.
