Gift Ideas for your Friendly USPS Letter Carrier

If you are a constant USPS customer, chances are that you have probably developed an amicable working relationship with the letter carrier assigned in your neighborhood. The feedback for postal workers who bring and collect mails to our homes has generally been quite positive. Not only do they do their jobs but they also do work that falls above and beyond their call of duty. For example, they know if you’re not home but forgot to file a request to have the post office hold your mail. Even if it is not already their responsibility, a lot of letter carriers collect the mail once more and delivers it again when you get home.

You certainly want to show your appreciation to your mailperson for doing things that are not anymore their responsibility. However, all postal workers have to follow the Standard of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch where they may only accept gifts (not cash or checks) valued at $20 or less. If you’re creative, there are many different things you can give to show your token of appreciation to a postal worker.

Cookies and Other Treats. If you have the knack for baking then why not give the mailman your own home baked goodies? Whether it’s cookies, biscuits, or chocolates, these edibles will surely be appreciated as they give a quick energy boost to letter carriers who have to be on their feet for 5 to 6 hours carrying satchels that can weigh up to 35 pounds. If you can’t cook, a fruit basket filled with various fruits and other snacks will do just as well.

Personalized Stuff they can Use. Postal workers deliver mail come rain or shine so things that you give them that will help them do their work would be appreciated. A hat or cap or face towel with their name embroidered on it or a small thermos bottle that can keep drinks hot or cold are just some ideas. Travel cups for coffee or tea that can fit in the cup holder in their vehicles would certainly be put to good use right away by your dedicated postal worker.

Gift Certificates. If you know your postal worker’s favorite restaurant, you can give him or her gift certificate for there. Or, if she’s a lady and you know she likes to visit a certain spa, then why not give a gift certificate for a manicure, pedicure, or massage? It would surely soothe her tired and aching muscles after a long day at work.

Favorite Music. If you happen to know what your letter carrier’s favorite music or artist is then you can buy him a CD of that. We all know how therapeutic music can be—it lightens any load and makes the hours pass by faster. He or she can play the music when driving through his or her route.
